In my book, great sound is the key element to immersing an audience into a world and story regardless of a film's budget. With QUIET, a short about a girl's frustration and struggle after losing her hearing in a car accident, SoCal Film Group uses great sound production to sit the audience about 3 inches inside the main character's head.QUIET's well-crafted soundtrack offers up a unique POV from most other films. The audience only hears what Lindsey (Kendra Cover) hears after being in a car accident. Lindsey's hearing is damaged and the soundtrack presents her growing isolation from the audible world perfectly: ear-piercing ringing, muted voices, tension-building heartbeats and frustrating silence.
The film's story and sound build to an intense climax and put the audience right inside Lindsey's muted world of terror. The feel-good short of the year, it is not.
The film hasn't appeared online yet, but SoCal's blog mentions some opportunites to catch it later this month at a couple of Silver Lake Film Festival screenings.
Here are some other takes on QUIET:
Go see — and hear — this short if you can!
